Part 1 - Arriege and Central Pyrenees

The arid climbs and gorges of the Arriege open the penultimate chapter. Steadily we gain altitude by climbing westwards to the Col de Llose before stopping at the ski town of Font Romeu. On Stage 42, the Port de Pailheres opens up the High Pyrenees for us, and from here, one famous Tour de France giant proceeds another in this procession of “Classic Climbs”. True gems, all of them. With overnight stops at Tarascon, Bagneres de Luchon, Saint-Lary-Soulan and then Argeles Gazost (our rest day destination), this Chapter’s first half shows off the best of this old mountain range, revealing some lesser-ridden pearls along the way.

Part 2 - The Basque Country

Part two is all about the Basque Country, an area as rich in culture and history as it is in steep, narrow lanes used almost exclusively by shepherds, their flocks and the occasional cyclist! The riding is as harsh and tough as the barren grassland, and therefore just as beautiful! Overnight stops in Isaba (Spain), Estérençuby and Espelette (France), then Tolosa (Spain), provide excellent opportunities to experience the vibrant soul of this special place. We conclude with a rolling stage, which includes some great ocean views, into the Spanish capital of Bilbao. This vibrant city will play host to the start of the Tour de France in 2023.
